The design for the school is derived as a response to the dense urban context of the site as well as the functional brief. The key factors that guided the design were twofold. First, a large intimidating single mass was broken as far as possible into singular units to ensure a built form that is inviting for the kids. This was also complementary to the small-scale residential units that surrounded the site on all sides. Second: the proposed grid is a result of the endeavour to integrate the exteriors with the interiors and allow each individual classroom to open directly outwards and not share walls with other classrooms. The plan is simple, with the rotated cubes holding the requisite functions and the interstitial spaces becoming the spillovers that help create a healthy micro-environment for the children.
